Afghanistan thump Uganda in Group C campaign opener
Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran and Fazalhaq Farooqi shine as Afghanistan walloped Uganda by 125 runs in match 5 of the T20 World Cup match on Tuesday (June 4) in Providence, Guyana.
After Gurbaz (76 off 45 balls) and Zadran (70 off 46 balls) powered Afghanistan to 183/5 in their allotted 20 overs, Farooqi (5 for 9) did massive damage with the ball to bundle Uganda to 58 All Out.
Naveen-ul-Haq (2 for 4) and Rashid Khan (2 for 12) also contributed to the wickets column for Afghanistan with 2 scalps each, while Mujeeb Ur Rahman claimed the other wicket.
For Uganda, only Riazat Ali Shah (11 off 34 balls) and Robinson Obuya (14 off 25 balls) got to double figures as the rest of the batters fell for single digit scores, leading to the team posting the fourth lowest total in T20 World Cup history.
Farooqi got Ronak Patel, Roger Mukasa, Riazat, Obuya and skipper Brian Masaba to complete his five-wicket haul. The left-arm pacer was on a hattrick twice in his spell, but failed to take three in a row. He did, however, claim three wickets in an over to finish with fourth best figures in T20 World Cup.
Earlier, put into bat, Afghanistan openers were unforgiving to the Uganda bowling attack as Gurbaz and Zadran posted the country's highest powerplay score in T20 World Cup, and later the duo shared the second highest opening wicket stand in the tournament history.

Afghanistan start favourites against Uganda
In match 5 of the T20 World Cup 2024, Afghanistan and debutants Uganda open their Group C campaign at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence, Guyana on Monday (June 3).
This will be Afghanistan's seventh appearance in the shortest format World Cup tournament, while Uganda will be featuring in the show-piece tournament in any format for the first time.
Afghanistan Bank on T20 stars
Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan start favourites in the match as the Asian side features several players with massive T20 experience, having played on the international stage as well as major T20 leagues across the world.
The likes of Rashid, Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Noor Ahmad will bring their experience from having played in tournaments like the IPL.
Uganda Bank on experience
Uganda led by Brian Masaba, on the other hand, also come into the tournament with plenty of experience in the squad despite qualifying for the T20 World Cup for the very first time.
The 43-year-old Frank Nsubuga aside, the squad also features Alpesh Ramjani, who was one of the nominees for the 2023 ICC Men's T20I cricketer of the Year.
They secured a spot by comfortably defeating Rwanda in their last match of the Africa region qualifier.
Form of Afghanistan and Uganda in T20
The Asian side Afghanistan, who stunned several big names in last year's ODI World Cup, come into the tournament on the back of mixed form, having won only four of their last 10 T20Is.
With five wins in six games, Uganda was the standout team alongside Namibia in the Africa Qualifier as they sealed their berth in the mega event. Uganda have a stellar record leading up to the tournament with 41 wins in their last 49 T20Is, a win percentage of 83.67 percent.
